Holiday Makeup Look: Sparkle For The Holidays

A few weeks back, I shared my favourite fall makeup look as of late, and there’s nothing I like more than a good multitasking makeup look… for this one, we’re dolling up the eyes with a little glimmer for your holiday parties using our Stila and Glow Skin Beauty shadows that you can find in our shop! Check out the post here for the base of this look, and then read below for the 2.0 holiday makeup look!

The products:

Stila & Glo Skin Beauty

These Glitter and Glow shadows from Stila are perfect for the holidays! So many sparkles and colours to choose from. If you have started your holiday shopping, these are great stocking stuffer ideas for friends and family!

The Look:

Apply base first (see how, here!)

Step 2: Eyes

The application can be very simple with these liquid shadows. Whether you glide them on your bare lid with your fingers or pat them on with a synthetic brush they will create a stand out eye!

Pro Tip: When using the lighter shades, focus on the lower lid and inner corner of the eye to brighten and lift the eye.

Step 3: Bronzer

Apply the Glo Skin Beauty bronzer to enhance the cheek bones and contour the face. I love the colour bronzer instantly gives especially during the winter months! Be sure to apply at the forehead, down the temples and underneath the cheek bones then lightly down the neck (this motion creates a shape of a number 3).

Step 4: Lips

I’m using my current favourite lip colour from Stila.  This is a lipstick and balm in one, and it’s super hydrating. My go to colour is Isabelle!

Voila! Give this look try for your holiday parties!

Get the Look: The Ultimate Holiday Makeup

Winter is here and the holidays are coming! Parties and special events out on the town give you the perfect excuse to dress up and go glam! Complement your favourite cocktail dress or jumpsuit with the ultimate holiday makeup. It’s dramatic, sultry and anyone can pull it off!

Here’s how to get the look:

  • Start with a primer on your eyelids from lash line to brow bone to ensure your make-up doesn’t smudge or travel.
  • Apply the Stila Aqua glow concealer to your under eyes for an even, blank canvas. Pro-tip: Brush translucent powder under your eyes to catch any dark eye shadow that may fall down during application. When you finish the look, simply use a tissue to wipe away the powder for a clean finish!

  • Using the Glo Cream shadow in Toast, start by blending all over the lid to crease. Using a cream will create more texture on the eyes and give the shadow staying power throughout the evening.
  • Use a black pencil or gel eye liner to trace upper and lower lash lines. Don’t forget about the water line! Gently blend with a small smudge brush or cotton swab. One of my favourite products that works wonders is the Stila smudge stick in Stingray. Seriously, it stays put!
  • Use a round tip, medium brush to apply a smokey brown shade from the Stila Soul Palette to your upper lash line and blend up in sweeping motions to the outer edge of your eye.
  • Lightly brush Kitten shadow from Stila in the corner of your eye blending outwards. Apply a light dusting of this shadow on your brow bone to highlight.
  • Finish with a heavy coat of Paul & Joe smudgeproof mascara. For this look I’ve added our Mink lashes in Smoke Show.

Finish the look with  Glo Minerals creamy lip crayon in shade Jetset – it’s so dynamic with the smokey eye and perfect for a holiday makeup!

Smokey eyes can be paired with a sheer, nude gloss or with red lippy to turn heads this holiday season! Now, all you need is the mistletoe…

A Classic Sunshine Coast Wedding

This week for Wedding Wednesday we are featuring M&M’s big day on the Sunshine Coast. These two came all the way from Australia to celebrate their special day with family and friends in beautiful B.C.!

The Westcoast Wilderness Lodge showcases B.C. in all of its natural beauty. This oceanside venue was a perfect setting for their July wedding and was photographed beautifully by Jennifer Picard.

Our senior makeup artist Jenny traveled from Vancouver to beautify Mary on her big day! Since Mary lives in Australia, she had minimal days in Vancouver prior to the wedding, putting all her trust in Jenny’s skills to create the perfect bridal look on her wedding day, which of course, worked out beautifully!

Mary’s main concern was to look like herself, which is music to our ears! Jenny chose a soft pink cheek and lip with a focus on the eyes, applying a bold liner and a full set of lashes. Her skin was glowing, too!

Mary’s dress has us in absolute awe! This custom gown from Made With Love Bridal in Australia is so sleek and stunning!

Master This: Best Fall Makeup Trends 2017

Cozy knits, vampy nails and pumpkin spice lattes mean that Fall is officially here. As summer (and your tan) fades into a memory, your make-up routine is likely going from a barely-there, sun-kissed face to a more dramatic. Did we hit the nail on the head there?

As the evenings get longer, dim lighting and candles mean good lighting is everywhere – it’s a literal Insta filter for your face, and we are SO down with that! Add a new fall beauty look, and you’re golden.

The latest Fall makeup trends include jewel-tone smokey eyes with metallic eyeshadows in electric colours, feathery lashes (both bottom and top), bold lips and just-in-from-the-cold blush. For the perfect Fall face, pick 1 or 2 of your fave looks and incorporate them into your makeup routine.

For now, we’re breaking down one of Denise’s FAVE fall beauty looks, and trust us, you’ll love experimenting with the colours of the season and rocking these trends!

1. First thing’s first: hydrate! I can’t stress this enough – a glowy complexion is the base of any great makeup. Glo Minerals has a soft luxurious daytime cream with a built in SPF. Two pumps is all you will need!

 2. Foundation doesn’t have to be cakey or thick. Choose a foundation suited for your skin type and apply a very thin coat! You want your skin to look fresh. My current fave is the Stila Stay All Day Foundation combined with Stila Aqua glow concealer. Finish with the Glo Minerals Luxe Setting Powder and Compact Bronzer to warm up the skin! We sell each of these products in the shop, and would love to colour match you.

3. Eyes!

Always start with a primer, my fave is the Paul & Joe Eye Colour Primer in shade 02. Next, using the Stila Matte and Metals Palette, sweep a bit of the camel tone shadow on the lid and into the crease. Blend the darker colour into the crease to make the eyes pop. This look was created with all the matte shadows in the palette as opposed to the shimmer shades. To make my brown eyes pop, I lined both the top and bottom using black amethyst smudge liner from Stila.

4. Brows

Brows make a huge different, and most of all frame the face! My go-to fav is the Glo Skin Beauty brow pencil. It’s easy to use and glides on! A must have in any makeup bag.

5. Lips

To finish off the look, I used a deeper berry shade, however, the formula is sheer, so if you’re looking for a darker lip, but don’t want to commit,Stila colour balms in Elyssa is for you to try!

Master This: How to Create a Boho Braid

As the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, it is harder to wake up to get ready. Seriously! Leaving the coziness of a warm, fluffy bed to primp and style our hair is the last thing you want to do on a dark morning, right?! Lucky for you, braided hair is in style this season! Even if you’re not a fan of Game of Thrones, you’ll be inspired to try our quick, trendy braided hairstyle for fall by created by our very own (talented team) Christina Robson.

Braids keep your hair healthy by avoiding damaging tools and the best style to wear when you’re avoiding those dreaded hair washing days. Whether you prefer to wear your hair down, half up or fully swept off your neck, there is a style for you, so here is one of our fave braids, along with a step-by-step how to create a Boho braid!

  1. First starting off with Milkshakes Dry Shampoo (which helps clean up the hair on those cold and wet days), grab horizontal sections aiming the spray at the root, which helps eliminate any oil build up but also adds a bit of texture to the hair.

Braided Hairstyle for Fall

2. Jenny likes to part her hair on her right side, so grabbing three small sections on the left at the top of her hair, we are going to criss cross sections going underneath each other to create what is called a “Dutch Braid”. Don’t stress if it’s not perfect … remember, it’s going to be textured and messy at the end for that Boho feel.

3. Continue braiding down along your hair line.

4. Before Putting in a hair elastic hold the bottom of the braid spray with EVO’s “She Bang A Bang” all long the braid.

5. Then starting from the top of the braid, lightly pull each loop of the braid. This will create that fullness and thickness of the Boho braid, especially for those that have finer hair. This braid will create that illusion of having thicker hair!

6. When finished, put in the elastic to help hold it together.

7. Pull all of your hair from the right side to the left side of your face. Once again, section off into three sections to start another dutch braid.

8. When doing this, incorporate your first braid in continuing all the way down .

9. Spray again with “She Bang A Bang” and pull out loops of braid while holding the bottom .

10. Once you are happy with how it looks put in another elastic , and tease the end of the braid for that messy look.

Voila, this is how to create a boho braid! Will you be trying this one?

Master This: The Dark Lip

Master This: The Dark Lip

There is a chill in the air and the leaves  are vibrant hue which can only mean one thing. Yes, Fall is here… but more importantly, time for the dark lip! We LOVE playing with fall beauty trends, and as soon as the weather cools down, we are pulling out our fave dark lippy hues.

An unforgettable pout in a daring shade is the perfect way to update your Fall style. From vivid berry or violet to rich crimson or Bordeaux, anyone can pull off a daring dark lip once you know the tricks!

How to wear a dark lip:

  • Try on a few shades before committing (this is the fun part that we want to help you with in out Shop+Studio!)
  • Choose a color that complements your complexion (not your outfit) and be adventurous – this is a bold look!

Master This: The Dark Lip

  • You can apply this Fall lip trend by going matte or by layering on some gloss depending on how glam you feel. Matte lips will last longer, and gloss will need to be reapplied more often.
  • Start by layering a thin wash of concealer over the lips to help the colour stay on longer, and to prime the lips. OR, if you want to get your inner pro makeup artist on, use a lip primer  – my go to is Lush Lips water plumping primer from Stila,
  • To create a perfect lip look, I always find it’s best to use a lip liner after to blend and define the lip colour.

Shop our fave dark, vampy shades in our Shop+Studio:

STILA: If you’re looking for lip stains, my go to brand is Stila. My favs to create a dark lip are Ricco, Beso, Chianti and Patina. Stila also has colour balms which aren’t as pigmented, however, if you’re wanting to venture into a dark lip, Elyssa is a great alternative shade for a sheer lipstick.

Glo Skin Beauty: Bombshell is the perfect red and Demure/Trademark are the best neutral lip colours.

Paul and Joe: Paul and Joe’s line of lippies are made with jojoba oil, lavender oil, cocoa butter, orange flower water, and white lily extract, so they are SUPER hydrating! Shade 306 is a dark mauve, which works well for fair complexions.

So, which shade are you planning to rock this fall? XO

Rooftop Wedding in Vancouver

It’s that time of the week again, Wedding Wednesday! This week features M&S’s big day at the iconic rooftop above Chambar Restaurant in Vancouver.

With this beautiful city as the backdrop these two tied the knot in front of there closest family and friends! With Margot from Petite Pearl Events on their side, M&S’s vision of a classic yet fun filled wedding came to life.

My senior artist Emily had the pleasure of beautifying Meghan and her ladies. The Bridal look Emily chose had Meghan’s style written all over it. She is definitely not afraid of a bold lip and loves a smokey black liner!

Meghan’s stunning and contagious smile shines through every photo captured by Nomad Photography.

This overflowing bouquet by Celsia filled with plum and burgundy florals compliments both Meghan’s dress and makeup look perfectly!

A Pacific West Coast Wedding

As we slowly wind down from a very busy season we are excited to share A&E’s Pacific West Coast Wedding! It felt like this Summer just flew by so it’s nice to take a minute now to look back on some of the special weddings we were lucky enough to be a part of.

A&E’s big day couldn’t have come to life without the hard work and planning of Sandy Pandher. We are absolutely in love with the romantic yet rustic vibe A&E’s vendor team executed here at Brockhouse.

Bespoke Decor and Our Little Flower Co worked tirelessly to create the most timeless setting.

The bridal look I created for Alyx was glamorous yet tasteful. With a soft smokey eye, warm cheeks and a tea rose lip, Alyx’s best features shined through! The camera will always take down the makeup so its crucial to make sure you look your best both in person and on camera!

I just love the heartfelt emotion these candid shots by Shari & Mike portray. The love and beauty involved in this day are captured perfectly!

Paul and Joe Beauty in Vancouver

Paul and Joe Beauty is a gorgeously feminine and fun line for a makeup look that is beautifully natural and yet impactful. The retro inspired packaging with a modern twist is simply irresistible, and would look oh-so pretty on your dresser or bathroom counter! We are honoured to be the only place to get Paul and Joe Beauty on the North Shore.

This line is a pleasure to use, with a focus on all day hydration and bringing out ones “inner glow.”

Some of the products we carry in store include the eye makeup remover, moisturizing foundation primer, concealers and illuminating pens, foundation and pressed powders, blushes, lipsticks, lip liner duo pencils, lip gloss, eye colour primer, eyebrow powder duos, and mascaras. Stop in, and try out a new fave!

One of our favourite products in the Paul and Joe line is the moisturizing foundation primer, which Denise calls her “magic product”. Offering all day hydration, this primer gives the skin a beautiful glow, evening out the complexion and creating the perfect base for foundation. Your skin will look and feel great all day!

This line has some seriously high-performing primers; their eye colour primer is equally amazing.

Denise’s PRO TIP: Use a thin layer all over the lids – the hydrating formula brightens the eye area by covering any darkness or discoloration. Used under eyeshadow, it will enhance and deepen the pigment and longevity for all day perfection!

Another favourite has to be the lipsticks! With a wide array of pretty shades to choose from, these lipsticks range from very sheer to fully opaque, all offering a moisturizing and comfortable feel on the lips. One of the best parts for those of you who are a sucker for packaging (hands up!)… you can choose the case to suit your personal style, and your lipstick goes in that. It’s like candy for your purse!

Love, Denise Elliott
